The short answer
A quick early drop, then a long plateau
Every lithium-ion battery loses a little capacity as it ages. On a Taycan the pattern is consistent: a quicker drop of about 5–8 percentage points over the first 20,000–40,000 km, then a long, slow plateau of less than one point per 10,000 km.
Past 50,000 km, the difference between two individual cars is usually bigger than the difference extra kilometres make. That is why a measured battery reading matters more than the odometer.
The basics
What “battery health” means
Battery health, or state of health (SoH), compares how much energy the battery can store today with what it held when new. 100% is new; 90% means it holds 90% of its original usable energy — and gives roughly 90% of the original range.
On a Taycan with the larger battery (about 340–400 km of real-world range), every 5 points of health is worth roughly 20–25 km.
Which battery?
Taycan batteries, 2022–2025
| Model years | Battery | Total / usable | Max fast charging |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022–2024 | Performance Battery | 79.2 / 71.0 kWh | 225 kW |
| 2022–2024 | Performance Battery Plus | 93.4 / 83.7 kWh | 270 kW |
| 2025 on (facelift) | Performance Battery | 89 / 82.3 kWh | 320 kW |
| 2025 on (facelift) | Performance Battery Plus | 105 / 97 kWh | 320 kW |
The facelift was revealed in early 2024 and sold as the 2025 model year, so a car first registered in 2024 could be either generation — the build date tells you which. The 2025 batteries use a newer cell chemistry and are promising, but they are still too new for meaningful ageing data. The figures below are for 2022–2024 cars.
The smaller Performance Battery goes through more charge cycles for the same distance, so it may wear slightly faster per kilometre than the Performance Battery Plus.
By age and kilometres
Expected battery health for a healthy Taycan
Porsche’s own reading, taken after a full balancing charge. 2022–2024 cars.
| Age | 0–25,000 km | 25–50,000 km | 50–100,000 km | 100–160,000 km | Look closer if below |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1 year | 94–97% | 92–95% | — | — | 92% |
| 1–3 years | 92–95% | 89–93% | 88–92% | — | 88% |
| 3–5 years | 91–94% | 88–92% | 88–93% | 87–92% | 86% |
| 5–8 years* | 89–93% | 87–91% | 86–91% | 85–91% | 84% |
* 5–8 years is projected from the trend — the oldest Taycans are only now reaching that age. Allow ±2 points around these ranges for normal variation between cars and measurements.
Check a battery reading
Reading a report
Why two reports on the same car can disagree
- Different tools. Porsche’s quick and full tests, independent testers and phone apps can differ by 5–8 points on the same car.
- Season. Readings move by 1–2 points between summer and winter.
- Balancing. A full charge from low to 100% lets the battery recalibrate, and the figure can rise by a couple of points.
- Software updates can shift the reported figure.
So compare like with like: one method, against the range for that age and mileage. And don’t judge a Taycan against another brand’s figure — Porsche’s own reading tends to look a few points more cautious than some other makes.
Measuring
How battery health is checked
| Method | What it is | How much to trust it |
|---|---|---|
| Porsche full battery test | Done at a Porsche Centre: the car is run nearly empty, rested, charged and rested again. Takes 1–2 days. | The reference — it’s what the warranty uses. |
| Porsche quick reading | Read from the car’s battery computer in minutes. | Good for screening; can read several points low. |
| Independent battery certificate | A short test by an independent specialist such as AVILOO, compared against similar cars. | Independent and easy to understand; often a little higher than Porsche’s figure. |
| Diagnostic apps | A plug-in adapter and a phone app read the car’s own figure plus individual cell data. | Close to Porsche’s full test when taken after a full balancing charge. |
| The dashboard | Shows charge level and range. | Not a battery health reading. |
What wears a battery
Fast charging, heat and sitting full
Frequent fast charging. A 2026 study of more than 22,700 EVs across 21 models found that cars relying heavily on chargers above 100 kW lost about 3% of capacity a year, against about 1.5% for cars that mostly charged slowly. Taycan owner data is more reassuring: heavily fast-charged cars still read 92–94% at 80,000–138,000 km.
Heat. Hot climates added about 0.4 points a year in the same study. Over eight years in Cyprus that is roughly 1–3 points — real, but smaller than the difference between individual cars.
Sitting very full or very empty. Long periods parked at a high or very low charge — especially in summer heat — do the most harm.
In Cyprus
Looking after a Taycan battery
80% for daily use
Set the daily charge limit to 80%, as Porsche recommends. Charge to 100% before a long trip — just don’t leave it sitting full.
About 50% if parked
Leaving the car for weeks? Park it at around half charge, never close to empty.
Shade in summer
Park in a garage or shade when you can, and precondition while plugged in on hot days.
Fast charging for trips
Use home or slower AC charging day to day, and save fast chargers for longer journeys.
Warranty
What Porsche guarantees
Porsche covers the Taycan’s high-voltage battery for 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, and guarantees a minimum share of its original usable capacity: 80% for the first 3 years or 60,000 km, then 70% to the end of the warranty. Below that, Porsche can repair the battery — often by replacing individual modules rather than the whole pack.
A 2022 Taycan is therefore covered until about 2030 if it stays under 160,000 km. Porsche’s handbook also sets out how to store the car; leaving it standing for long periods at a very low charge can affect cover. Buying used? Ask the seller to confirm with Porsche that the battery warranty is active on the car’s VIN.
Before you buy
Red flags worth checking
- Battery health clearly below the “look closer” figure for its age and kilometres.
- Below 85% on a car under 8 years old.
- Battery warning messages or stored fault codes.
- A charge limit stuck at 80% — often a sign of an unfinished recall.
- Fast charging that never gets above about 150 kW from a low charge on a warm battery.
None of these make a car a write-off — inside the warranty they usually mean a free repair. But they should be checked by Porsche before you buy.
Questions
Taycan battery FAQs
How much battery capacity does a Porsche Taycan lose?
Most of the loss happens early: a healthy Taycan typically drops 5–8 percentage points over its first 20,000–40,000 km, then loses less than one point per 10,000 km. Readings of 88–92% are normal even past 100,000 km.
Is 90% battery health good for a Taycan?
For a car with more than about 30,000 km, yes — healthy Taycans usually read 88–93% from that point on. On a car under a year old with low mileage, 90% is below the usual range and worth a full Porsche battery test.
Does fast charging damage a Taycan battery?
Across EVs in general, frequent fast charging speeds up wear. Taycan owner data is reassuring, though: cars with heavy fast-charging use still read 92–94% at 80,000–138,000 km. Use fast chargers for trips and slower charging day to day.
What does the Porsche Taycan battery warranty cover?
8 years or 160,000 km. Porsche guarantees at least 80% of the original usable capacity for the first 3 years or 60,000 km, and at least 70% after that until the end of the warranty.

About this guide
Where these figures come from
No large published study looks at the Taycan on its own. These ranges combine about 30 documented battery readings — from owner groups, long-term magazine tests, Porsche’s own published examples and used-car battery certificates — with two large studies covering many EV models. Treat them as well-founded guidance rather than exact figures.
